He didn't see any of Frenchman in France fighting for their freedom.

And, the French were betraying the Americans by telling the Germans where Americans were during the next month after Americans landed in Normandy.

Anyone surprised? What does this say about the French?

That's not much of a reason for so many traitors and cowards is it?

French Resistance cells have been credited with providing vital intelligence in the lead-up to D-Day. Some resistance fighters gave their lives gathering information and in diversionary actions that General Eisenhower had requested in connection with D-Day. Read and learn.

He wouldn't have seen any Frenchmen when he landed on the beaches of Normandy as they had all been blocked off with barbed wire by the Germans in any case.

The post is offensive to the many people in the French Resistance who gave their lives and worked in a tremendously dangerous environment. Ever heard of Jean Moulin? Look him up.

Yes, there would have been SOME (and note, not all) French informers working for the Germans but that said, you got collaborators in EVERY country that was occupied by the Germans!!! The immense majority of people were overjoyed at seeing the Americans, British, Canadians and anyone else who took part in D-Day (such as the forces of the Free French under the control of General de Gaulle).

No one doubts for a moment the heroism of Americans or indeed any other country taking part in the liberation of Europe (and note that although the bulk were Americans, they weren't the only country taking part) and many today are thankful for what they did. However, more informed posts when talking about that period would be welcome.

Mark this down... 11/10/07... Professional Y!A troll Sam ba Bam reaches new low by attacking the French over D. Day.

Dear genious. It doesn't take a history expert to realize that France was occupied by Nazi Germany and the French military was dismantled at that time.

If it weren't for the French, we would have lost the Revolutionary War and wouldn't own half of the US.

Sincerely,

The American beaches at Normandy, Omaha etc., were overlooked by thousands of Krauts. All hell was let loose on those beaches by the Germans. I saw one former German machine-gunner on TV a while back, who as an 18 year old, had been ordered by his troop commander to keep firing and not to let any Americans come ashore.

The British beaches were quite different. I know of one Normandy Veteran who told me he was offered sex from French women and girls and plied with fine wines as he marched along the country lanes.

Your Grandfather must have had a terrible time, especially if he went ashore on wave one on day one.

If you see the movie Saving Private Ryan - it will give you a very good idea what Omaha beach was actually like. The film company had lots of hand-held cameras in among the extras coming ashore. Some live ammo was also used with stunt crews. The sounds you hear of the bullets hitting flesh were created shooting bullets into beef carcases.

Normandy was a real scary time for everyone.

Tomorrow here in UK is Remembrance Sunday and the nation will be lead by HM Queen at the Cenotaph Whitehall here in London..

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

One final comment - the day before D-Day the SAS landed in France. They had Jeeps with heavy machine-guns mounted fore and aft of each vehicle. The SAS raced through the villages of Normandy shooting into the houses. Their plan was to kill as many Germans as possible. Probably killed a lot of French too.

What are you talking about? Have you heard of the term "Partisan"? The European partisans (French, Spanish, German...) all fought the axis powers, and in large numbers. That includes Vichy France (before D-Day).
It's just that the French were far from alone, though still numerous. It was a collaborated effort of all Europeans. These "Freedom" fighters played an enormous roll in WWII.

And anyways, what would civilians or partisans be doing on a beach during WWII? Of course they wouldn't be there.

The Germans had cleared the French civilians from most of the beaches so they weren't there. It's difficult for civilians, unarmed civilians at that, to fight a well trained army like the Germans had.

What does it say about the French? I am glad your grandfather fought in the Great Crusade (to quote General Eisenhower) and all Americans thank him for his sacrifice but it sounds like he had some other issues going on. It says more about your Grandfather than it does about the French.

And please don't ruin your stance by talking about Bill Clinton. Please.

well, this is a bunch of nonsense

had hitler been able to invade the US instead of France, guess what? We would have fallen, like every other country he invaded. The german military was far superior than any other at that time- similar to the US military now.

The French resistance numbered 400,000 and used a guerrilla war to help soften the Nazi force, their contribution was needed.

my grandfather was there too, but never talked about the french or anything else he saw.

1st of all, Thank your grandfather for all of us, his truly is "The Greatest Generation".

If he landed on the beaches, I doubt he would have seen many French.

And yes, the Vichy "government" of France did have collaborators that were traitors to everyone who fought for freedom.

You will find this to be true in any war or conflict, always, there are those who will betray their own country-men and those who come to liberate them.

Let's not paint the whole French people with the same brush.

The French had been occupied for quite awhile by the time we got involved. Maybe if we'd acted faster and not waited until the French Resistance had been fighting for years, or maybe even joined in before France was taken, then your grandfather could have seen more of them defending their country.

How can you come from a country that hasnt seen real violence in decades and judge a country that was occupied by a force enabled by us (through ignoring what was happening and through financial blunders)?
