The best source for your answer is your vehicle's owners manual, It will tell you what kind of motor oil is recommended for your vehicle's engine. Synthetic oil is more expensive and really a waste of money. The only difference between conventional oil and synthetic oil is that synthetic is man made, conventional motor oil is petroleum based. Being your car is now 17 years old, and still running good I assume, you must have been doing something right. The best thing to do is just keep doing what you have been doing all those years. Whatever motor oil you have been using, I would keep using it. just keep it changed at regular intervals like you have always been doing being you say the vehicle is well maintained.

Synthetic and synthetic blends are always better than conventional motor oils. This is based on test after test and comparative results.
Several reasons synthetics are better: The engine is kept cleaner through improved sludge and varnish protection.
Engine wear is reduced when running at high temperatures.
More stable viscosity, better cold temperature starts, improved fuel efficiency, prolonged oil change intervals, etc.
I switched to 100% synthetics 8 years ago on all my vehicles
(5) and change the oil and filter every 10,000 miles. Several cars are over 100,000 miles with no problems.
Research sythetics on the web and you will see test after test shows how superior sythetics are to conventional motor oils.
We've also been led to believe oil must be changed every 3,000 miles which is only true under certain conditions and is a way for the merchants to make money.
Research synthetics and you'll become a believer. There is no arguement on which is better.
Good Luck

I have a 1999 9-3 with about 85k on it and I have been changing it every 5000 miles since I purchased it without a problem. 10000 is just too much to risk regardless of what the manual says or what synthetic oil is capable of. Keep it around 5k max between every change and you wont have to stress at all. This seems to be the general view of most saab owners and mechanics/technicians I have talked too. You bought a high performance car and you want to get high performance out of it so treat it nice. Plus these things can be expensive to fix compared to the average vehicle so the more preventative maintenance you do the better off you will be in the long run.
