Check your universal joints. They are the most likely cause. (CV joints if its a front wheel drive.) Left unattended, they can leave you walking when they break.

(P.S. You get what you pay for at those lots.)

Start van and put foot on brake. Move gearshift from Park to Drive. Does it clunk? Move gearshift from Drive to Reverse. Does it clunk?

On RWD vehicles, this would be the idle speed is too high (banging into gear at high RPM), or wear in the tranny's output yoke, the U-joints, or inside the rear axle. You'll have to get under and check for slack in each part of the driveshaft.

Clunking when shifting or taking off can be a broken tranny mount, or internal damage to the tranny. If the tranny is damaged, it usually hesitates, lurches, or makes whining or grinding noises when shifting.

Pull the dipstick and smell the tranny fluid. Is it pink? Does is smell burnt? That'll tell you a lot.

given the conditions that the noise occurs under, i would first check the integrity of both engine mounts, and the transmission mount(s). a universal joint will make noise in either direction.

Try changing the transmission fluid, or see its state. Possibly that its never been changed. If its all gritty...good luck (in the nicest and most sarcastic possible way)
