or are they the same thing ???

you can use them like that.
No they are not always the same thing
Folklore can be true stories often pasted down by word of mouth, from generation to generation.

Mythology can also be based on real events, a giants may have once been merely a very tall man. someone being over 7foot, when everyone around is under 5foot. and so a Legend or the story is born.
