I had parked my tarus at work and when I went to leave it would not pull, neither foward or reverse. It didnt try to pull at all.It never gave me any symtoms such as slipping or not changing smoothly, and it is an automatic.I noticed a slight ''whinning'' sound comming from the front under the hood on the left.I checked transmission fluid and its ok.I had this happen to me on a older ford tarus but it was at a stop light. It seems like something broke internally versus gears wearing out.The transmission has 165,000 k on it.I guess I got expected use out of it,any advice would be appreciated.

Its time for a transmission overhaul. I have a 1994 taurus and had to do the same thing, The model years 1993 to 1997 transmissions life is about 180,000 miles, I got 195,000 out of mine. The trans type should be a AXOD. The Taurus AXOD is a great transmission, not a trouble maker as some people say, it just has a short life Now, if you choose this route, shop around for a GOOD reputable transmission rebuild shop, NOT AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP !!!!, The sensors and internal circuits can only be scanned by a reputable transmission shop with the proper tools. Be sure to request that the "updates" are installed since Ford has updated some components in that particular transmission. Being im not up to speed on transmissions, I let a friend of mine that I have know for many years who has been rebuilding them for nearly 50 years rebuild mine, he told me that his experience with that particular model trans is that Ford didnt "finish" building it right. Once the Ford updates are installed during the rebuild, you will have one hell of a trans when you take off at the stop line. Thats what I have now and I have turned heads with it on the takeoff. Only cost me $1350. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your year model falls in that category. Good luck.

I don't think there is a simple fast fix, unless it is out of fluid. The transmission should last a lot longer than those miles, needs periodic servicing just like the engine does. Without being serviced, you should follow manufacturers recommendations on this, it can get gummed up and quit working, which this sounds like. It would be best to have it taken in and checked out by a shop or dealer. Even if you trade it in like it is, they will take the cost of repairs off the amount they allow you for trade, since they are in the business to "make money". They will not take a loss on the vehicle.

i can tell you from experience taurus are trouble makers, they might outrun cars traffic light to traffic light because they pack a lot a torque, but thats ironic, theyre faulty on theyre transmission i blame something wrong on the circuit transmission panels internally, i used to own a 91model and had to rebuilt the trans 2x can you believe how much i love it to do that, well 3rd time I exchange one from another same model same year it did slid, but i didn't got to see how long the trans will last because a truck crashed into it and well the story ended, what i can advice go to a autoparts store and have it scanned its youre best bed at replacing the right part, or just take it to an autoshop not transmission because they'll pop an eye out just to check it, most common if not a bad problem will be turbine, or torque converter, dirty trans fluid filter meaning oil change or some trans sensor gone....

call your community Ford broking with the serial form of your truck and that they'd allow you to be responsive to what form of transmission it has. maximum in all probability it is going to likely be an A4LD. examine their motorcraft line of rebuilt transmissions, a number of those are somewhat low-fee to the aftermarket and of greater valuable high quality, perhaps no longer yours, yet worth asking approximately.
