The Cincinnati Red Stockings were first playing as an organized professional team in 1869. Their name was shortened to "Reds" in 1889 when moving to the National League. Not much to the story.

As already stated, when professional baseball began, there were the Red Stockings, White Stockings, Blues, Browns, Maroons, etc. During the McCarthyistic 1950s, they altered the name to the Redlegs, but went back to the Reds, just the plain old primary color.

For future reference, it's spelled Cincinnati (2 Ns, 1 T).

Short For Redlegs, The Baseball Stockings They Originally Had Were Red. Also Try Putting Tube Bar In You Tube And Youll See And Hear A Red.

It's a remnant. It used to be Red Stockings. Even as late as the early 60s it was 'Red Legs'. Now, it's just the color. Oakland was known as the A's for quite a while before they went old school and became the 'Athletics' again. Little changes occur like that all the time.

Now, Expo or Astro. . .those are rather odd!!!

"Red Stockings" was the original name...shortened to "Reds". I hate to bring politics into it too, but Cincinnati is in a very conservative area of the country and red is the Republicans color. I always wondered if that was another reason that no one ever admitted to.

I doubt it, half the players wouldn't wanna be there if that were the case.

I think it's just the color. During the communist era - when the Mccarthy hearings were being held, the team changed it's name temporarily to the Red Stockings.

They used to be called the Redlegs. Sometime in the 60's they shortened it to the Reds.
