Actually you might need to format and partition through windows setup. It's like when you first time setup windows XP. You ought to plug the HDD into a desktop pc and format it through that. If you don't have a desktop, you can borrow one from your trusted friend. No worry about spoiling your friend's harddrive. Just unplug your friend's harddrive and plug yours in. So this won't influence your friend's HDD. Then insert windows xp cd inside and goto setup screen. Format and partition as usual till when it start to copying files for windows stop there. Unplug and your notebook should able to detect it. Just make sure windows setup able detect your sata HDD.

You need to format it.

Attach your external HDD to the USB port of your laptop. Right click My Computer then select Manage. Click Disk Management. The external drive should appear on the right portion of the new window. Right click on it, select Format.
