No one who is already married is allowed to go through a civil or legally recognised religious marriage ceremony in UK.

Some countries allow multiple marriages - we don't arrest people with more than one spouse when they come to UK, but we don't allow them to contract further marriages in UK, and if they do go through some religious ceremony, it is not legally recognised.

The maximum penalty for bigamy is, of course,.......

Two mothers-in-law.

It's because under our law one's capacity to marry is governed by the country of domicile. This means that if you were domiciled in a country which allowed bigamy when you entered into these marriages, then they have to be recognised under English law to the extent that you cannot have criminal charges brought against you for bigamy. However, if you acquired a UK domicile, then a bigamous marriage would be unlawful. Moreover, the law of our country does not permit anyone to enter into a bigamous union, so it is not possible to marry in the UK while you are already lawfully married to someone else.
There used to be a system whereby only the first wife of a bigamous or polygamous relationship was recognised as the legal wife for purposes of state benefits. That seemed fair enough to me.

Perhap you are confusing it with polygamy. Bigamy has always been unlawful in any culture unless you believe the two have the same meaning

Not in the UK you can't.

You can only legally marry one spouse at a time. Trying to marry when you're already married is illegal, but you can have as many live in lovers as you like - whatever your culture.

These people claim that their religion allows them, even demand, to have more than one wife. It's amazing what can be allowed in the name of religion. For instance, you are not allowed to kill yourself even if you are terminally ill. But if you are a Jehovah Witness, you can refuse blood transfusion that will definitely save you, and kill yourself. It's time such religions are exposed for their wickedness.
