Okay, so I have pretty bad insomnia, it's about 3 in the morning, and I can't sleep. I've already taken Tylenol PM and it hasn't made me any tireder at all. I was wondering if you think it's really stupid to just stay awake all night, and catch a few hours of sleep in a long car ride tomarrow. Oh and I have a little bit of a virus.
Please help?

Yeah, I've got a lot of personal problems going on at the moment.
I've also had insomnia for almost a month and my doctor told me to try Tylenol, it worked the first few days, but now it's just like I took nothing.

I'm a nite owl myself. This insomnia is due to long yrs of working the graveyard shift. My internal body clock is programmed to go to bed quite late. Sometimes, i stay up till 6 AM.

As much as possible; I avoid the use of any sedatives. as they are habit forming. So after a while they do not work anymore. Then there's the daytime fatigue. And being drowsy still upon waking up might lead you to overeat to obtain energy. and this will contribute to weight gain.

Here are a few tips I employ to be able to sleep at night:

1) Avoid stress or thinking about some problems. There's always another day. Stress can lead to dysfunction of the adrenal gland.
2) Make a "Things to do List " to prevent further worrying.
3) Make it a habit to try to go to bed the same time every night. Or try to bed early.
4) Try to wake up at the same time.
5) Read a book, watch TV, pray, meditate;
6) Avoid high intensity exercise just before going to bed. In other words, do not go to bed quite exhausted. Exercise moderately, even a 30 min walking is nature's natural tranquilizer.
7) This is my favorite. And it works every time; listen to your CD or MP3 - Soothing, relaxing music. Apply this brain-wave synchonization. A CD in here plays pleasant sounding frequencies that resonates in your brain to relaxation frequencies.
8) A warm relaxing bath.or warm shower. before bedtime.
9) Drink a warm glass of milk or chocolate.
10) Avoid drinking coffee or soda close to bedtime. Avoiding medications and stimulants such as caffeine go a long way to a sound night's sleep.
11) Get bright sun exposure during the day.
12) Keep the bedroom temperature cool. Make the room pitch black at night. Wear warm bedclothes. Use blankets for comfort.
13) If you are of age; sex is another method.
14)) Tylenol PM is harmless for sleep.
You can also try using the antihistaminics - Benadryl. Avoid strong sedatives. They are habit forming. They don't necessarily make you feel refreshed and well rested the other day.
15) Avoid heavy meals at night. Going to bed on a full stomach is definitely a no-no.

No, You're not being stupid by staying awake. However, sleep is very impt. The body has to rest and recharged its batteries to face a new day the following day. If you have little viral infection, rest and fluids will certainly help.

Moreover, in order to look and stay young, you need to sleep. During sleep is when body cells are broken down and new cells are built up.

I would be leery of the L- tryptophan.
For years people took tryptophan pills to treat insomnia and depression and to improve mood. This amino acid is converted in the brain into serotonin, an important neurotransmitter that affects mood and sleep, among other things. But in 1989 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned all sales of tryptophan because of an outbreak of eosinophilic myalgia syndrome (EMS, a rare disorder that affects the skin, blood, muscles, and organs) among thousands of people taking the pills. At least 30 people died

If needed, you can certainly sleep in the car for a long drive if your help is not needed by the driver. Remember driver might also get sleepy during the long drive. Never attempt to drive if you lack sleep.

I wouldn't get in the habit of taking something for sleep. I don't think Tylenol PM is necessarily addictive, but there are a few things you can do if you really have insomnia. These will sound too simple even, but they typically work.

First, if you can change the temperature in your house/apartment/room, make it slightly cold, even if you don't like the cold. Like maybe 69 degrees or so. Don't drink caffeine or alcohol before bed, and try to avoid eating within an hour or two before you want to sleep. Leave off the tv unless you find you sleep better with noise in the background. I sleep better to music. Sometimes "my" kind of music, and sometimes not my kind, like classical or just soothing music. Then either clear your head of thoughts to the best of your abilities, or think about stuff so much you end up just falling asleep before you know it.

I hope any of that helps.

(I don't think it's weird to catch your extra sleep in the car though if you end up having to... and I hope you feel better.)

You might keep track of what you're drinking during the day. A lot of the soft drinks have caffeine, as well as tea, coffee, etc. Some otc pain meds do too, like Anacin, and Excedrin. If I take them after 3:00 p.m. I'll be up all night. Also our internal body clock tells us when to go to sleep, if in a perfect world, when it gets dark outside, our body starts to release melatonin, you go to bed in a dark room, and your body will sleep . Did you ever notice how sleepy and tired you get on Thanksgiving Day after dinner? It's the Tryptophan your body gets from the turkey. Eat a turkey sandwich with a glass of warm milk, and you'll sleep lke a baby.

try drinking some hot milk. That is supposed to help.
I would go back to bed and close my eyes and rest. Don't stay up all night. You will probably go to sleep in al little while.
If you are a Christian try praying. A lot of time when I start praying I get sleepy. (Worth a try)
