I think I'm just going to go with this:
Some people are our heroes because they inspire us to be good, noble, and better than who we are. They are our role models who bring the hero out in *us*, possibly saving a piece of our souls in the process. Albert Einstein would be such a hero because he started out so ordinary, but ended up being so important to his field, his world.
Other people are our heroes in a more straightforward way....they save other people's lives, one at a time. And it really doesn't matter so much if it's just a single man saving a boy from drowning and freezing in a river in the dead of winter, or if it's someone who is *paid to* save lives, like a fireman, or a paramedic...what matters is that the needed work is done, and that lives are saved when they otherwise would have ended. Pick almost anyone on the New York Fire Department on and after 9-11, they all really went above and beyond the call of duty on this one, even in spite of the loss of life that day....
Then there are those heroes who are who they are because they've *changed everything* and in so doing, have saved the world from a dreaded fate. Dr. Salk, who created the polio vaccine, is one such hero, while countless others more recently had the courage to take a stand and *prevent* an epidemic of lead poisoning from tainted paint on imported toys.
Then there are those heroes who have done what they can to save the world, thanks to their *sacrifice*. All give some, but some gave all. Soldiers on a battlefield come to mind here, but so too do teachers in a school during a school shooting, and so too do countless mothers when they do whatever it takes, including giving up their own children, to *save them* from an abusive, violent man who *claims* to be a husband or father. You see this when people die for a good, noble cause....but you also see this, and sometimes don't notice it so much, when people have merely *ruined their lives* for doing the right thing. Sacrifice is as sacrifice does.
All of these people are heroes, and the greatest of heroes have done *all* of these things. Ghandi, Mother Theresa, President Franklin Roosevelt, *every* Peace Corps and Red Cross *volunteer* who dies or gets maimed in a distant land just so they can *help people* who are dying....
There are many people like this, many we can name...and many more who we will *never* be able to name.
So the best thing to do, in the meantime, is to assume that *anyone* you meet could be a hero, and respect him or her accordingly.
Thanks for your time....good question!

There are several types of heroes. Beowulf is a a very typical version of a hero. He slays the monster and gets the glory. The other type is a tragic hero. This is a hero who doesn't realize that what he's doing is wrong until its too late to change things. Tragic heroes are usually the ones that end up severely maimed or dead. Then of course there is the modern heroine or hero. They usually are the person next door. They can be the best friend of the main character of the main character themselves. They don't expect anything in return and are there precisely when they are needed.

Yes...there's fake heroes, such as celebrities.
And then there's real heroes, such as real people who actually make a contribution towards society without hording millions and millions and dollars.
