Thank you all. This is the story of Tosca, a cat, badly injured by a dog. I understand the sentence as the cat has been wrestling with death for about one year but what I dont really understand is the role of "chasten" here because I don't find a relevant meaning in dictionaries.

thank you. I think I found it. I think it means Tuska had to pay the price of her wrongdoings and sins, or something so.
