Please help me understand the meaning of this sentence: "For about a year...?

"For about a year, it seemed that Tosca had been chastened by her scrape with death."

Thank you all. This is the story of Tosca, a cat, badly injured by a dog. I understand the sentence as the cat has been wrestling with death for about one year but what I dont really understand is the role of "chasten" here because I don't find a relevant meaning in dictionaries.
