Yes it's a good idea. Labs in particular are prone to eating weird things that get stuck in their gut and so often end up needing expensive surgery! Plus they often end up with arthritis and need ongoing medication.

Pet insurance is a good idea - that way you won't end up becoming one of the many people on here who complain that their pet is really ill and 'any home remedies because I can't afford to go to the vet'.

Have a look at www.petplan.com. This is one of the more expensive insurance companies - like everything, you get what you pay for. Whatever you choose, read the small print carefully and watch out for certain clauses - many insurance companies will only pay a certain amount per condition, once, which is no good at all if your animal ends up with a lifelong condition, like diabetes. If you're in England, Marks and Spencer insurance is good at the moment. Kennel Club is also good. Just stay away from Direct Line and E and L!

If you get pet insurance, get it right away while your animal
is young, before anything goes wrong with its health. Like any insurance, you are paying for
coverage just in case.... My friend has pet insurance, I
don't. She didn't use hers very much at first, but this last
year she had her 11 year old dog in for a sty that turned out to be
a skin cancer, while she was waiting to get her dog
back in for the second surgery, he ripped out his knee
just running around, so he had to have a 3rd surgery to
repair his knee a month after the cancer surgery. Her
vet bills for all this was about $4,000- the pet insurance
paid about half of that. So having the pet insurance
was a big help.
My little dog had a skin cancer too-
I ended up with a $1200 bill- I used CareCredit. They
will give you a 3 month no interest loan, but if you take
more than 3 months to pay the interest is about 21%.
But this worked for me, I paid the vet $300 the day of the
surgery and then put the $900 on CareCredit (you do need
to have good credit to qualify) and then paid it off $300 a
month the next 3 months. , I knew I could handle the $300 payments so I wasn't hit with the high interest.
So what you need to do is weigh your options and decide
which is the best for you and your finances. Sooner or later
your dog will end up at the vets, so you should have a plan.

From what I've heard, pet insurance is a rip off. I would recommend getting Care Credit. Most vets will accept it as a form of payment.

Otherwise, just have an extra credit card handy in case of emergencies.
