The best road city..............or the best road arena?
1. Far and away, the best road city in the NHL is New York City. So much to do when not watching hockey, I don't know where to begin. I've always managed to find something new to do in New York. With three teams within easy reach of one another, it's a great city to catch a game.
2. Second place goes to Montreal (my birthplace and therefore not a road city). A unique city among NHL cities. A great atmosphere, and the general population is hockey crazed. While tye phone booth is not the forum, still a great place to see a game
3. Third place is a tie between Chicago and Toronto. Both great places in their own right. There is a lot more to do in the Windy City than T.O, but I don't think the hockey fans in the English speaking world are as engrossed in their team as Toronto fans are engrossed in their Leafs. The balance between hockey craziness (tilted in Toronto's favour) and things to do (tilted in Chicago's favour) creates a tie for me.
Honorable mention.
Detroit - great place to see a game, but the city itself is nothing to write home about.

I went to a Penguins Thrashers game in Pittsburgh last season when it wasn't yet official that the Pens would stay in Pittsburgh. It was a great atmosphere in Pittsburgh in an arena which is now I believe the oldest in the NHL. Being a Flyers fan I do not like the Pens or their fans but it's was nice to sit and watch a game live where I had absolutely no rooting interest at all. If you've never done it I highly recommend it.

I just went to my first a couple of days ago in Ottawa against the Caps. I don't know what the second guy is talking about, but Sens fans and the people of Ottawa are MUCH better human beings than the people of Toronto.
Haley: the only reason was because he was 75. The older folks in general tend to go out of their way to have more fun. Try meeting someone from Toronto a lot younger and your opinions will change. Or better yet, bring a stress ball and come to Toronto! lol

Zther got a thumbs up just for his comment about Ottawa fans.
Yo hockey fans in the Great White North. A real treat today. 3 National games starting a 3pm! Get you whale blubber ready!
I bet it's different for every player and fan. I noticed that many American fans are blown away by just how hockey mad some Canadian cities are. That's cool. I think a few Canadian fans may need to find out just how noisy a US rink can get because Canadian fans (for the most part) tend to take a lesser vocal approach to their support when in a public venue.

I have been on road trips to Ottawa vs Washington to see Jagr float with Capitals, Pittsburh vs Rangers to see Lemieux in one of his last games with the Pens and again Jagr floated but he did score 2 goals in span of 15 seconds. But by far the best atmoshpere was in Montreal when I watched the Habs defeat the Sabres. Great history and passionate fans. The worst is Toronto where the suits sit on their hands ,no atmoshphere.

It depends on what you are looking for. If you want a nice place to visit...Orange County (Anaheim) is always nice. The Honda Center is one of the nicest, cleanest rinks but the fans are ho hum. Los Angeles has a nice rink, GREAT FANS (fierce and sometimes hostile) but LA is a crappy place to visit and the Staples Center is located in crap ville. I was surprised to see how nice Dallas was...very nice location, lots of things to do downtown (not to mention very historic) the Rink is VERY nice but I'd say the fans are also a little ho hum, not as bad as Anaheim though. Detroit has some serious hockey fans and there is a lot you can do in downtown Detroit, casinos, the people mover that goes from the rink into downtown is pretty cool but the rink itself is nasty.

Its definitely not Ottawa. Their fans are nasty. Last year a Female Sabres Fan was assaulted and punched in the face by two Ottawa Sens fans.
Montreal is a great Hockey city.
I live in Buffalo and I would say its a great hockey city but not the best.

2eighty8: I also have had a really good experience with Leaf fans. Went to a Habs/Lightning game, and sat next to some Leafs fans (maybe they were lost). By the time second intermission came around, I was dancing with some 75 year old Leaf fan (just to trying to get video of us on the scoreboard), and we were on the friendships of asking each other, "You guys need anything, I'm going to get a beer?". Ever since then, never met a Leafs fan I didn't like. ;)

I haven't been to all of the cities, but Columbus is pretty nice. Awesome arena, gracious fans(unless you are wearing a wings jersey), decent night life, and if you have time you're 2 hours away from the NFL Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Not Detroit. I've heard many good things about Vancouver from non-hockey fans, they just love the city. I would place that, Toronto and Chicago on my travel NHL-city-wish list.
