The Bridge (German 1959) aka Die Brucke

When I first saw this movie, I had never seen a film about World War II from the German point of view. This is the heartbreaking true story of some German students who were recruited in the last days of WWII and assigned to guard a bridge that no one was expected to approach. However, U.S. troops had decided to take that path. It truly shows the harshness and wastefulness of war as these boys die trying to protect the bridge.

I'm a Baby Boomer who was in college when Vietnam finally came to an end, so seeing this movie about that time hit me hard. I've seen it only once on television, but I've never forgotten it.

Ernie Pyle~My father told me about him, and I've also read about him and read some of his works. He was from nearby Indiana. Perhaps someday I'll get to go to the museum they have in New Harmony, the closest one.

I have a lot of war movie favorites, which probably would surprise many people. Others on my must-watch list are:
Patton
Hornets' Nest
The Big Red One
To Hell and Back~starring Audie Murphy, most-decorated soldier in WWII~based on his autobiography!
Sergeant York~most-decorated soldier in WWI
Apocalypse Now
Empire of the Sun
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Galipoli
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)
The Red Badge of Courage (movie, not TV production)
Lawrence of Arabia
Zone Troopers~I have a weakness for this weird little movie that mixes aliens into WWII.

I suppose I should stop there. So, are we talking any war? Strangely, most people select WWII then Vietnam films. I find that curious that most don't branch out to the other conflicts or stick pretty much to American wars.

I loved Braveheart, just the whole storyline was great. It showed the savage side of ancient battle, had a great story of courage. So many memorable lines and scenes.
