My car has been running like a champ until two days ago. I got into it on Wed. morning and I cranked it four or five time before it started. It never did this before. I added some fuel injection cleaner, then topped off the tank. The next day the check engine light came on. It still runs great, no stauling or rough idiling. Just the damn light. I did run my tank low prior to my fill up. I generally fill it up all the way, and run it down to 1/4 tank. Any suggestions would be great. I plan on taking it in next week. I bought it last year. It has 109k and may be due for atune up.

The check engine light means you have an emissions (smog) problem, your car is not burning clean. Yes, it runs great but it's not burning clean. By the way the reason why you had trouble starting it last Wed is because you've build gas sludge in your fuel injection system. Most people think that it's a good idea to run your gas near empty to get rid of the build up in the bottom of the gas tank. Wrong! by doing that your going to create build up and then it will clog the fuel injection lines and injectors. Always keep your car with a good amount of gas in it, so that way you will always have a good flow in your system. I also used to do the same to my car back in the day by running it almost to empty and then I experienced starting problems. I came to realize not to do that when I attended school for engine design. Go to an auto parts store to see what is your emissions code, it's free. From now on keep a good amount gas in the car. You should be ok now. Best of luck to you!

newer systems actually test the seal in the gas cap also. if the cap is a little loose. pull the cap off again. wipe it clean , along with the filler neck to the gas tank, re install the cap. turn the cap so that you hear it click three times. drive for a bit and see if the light goes out.
i know it all sounds weird, but give it a try, i have seen it work in the shop a few times.

There is no fuse to shut off the light. If you go to Autozone, they will determine what exactly the issue is. It would be more honest if that light said "check emissions system." Your car is detecting a problem, and it really is important that you address it. It could be an indication that your car is ready to fail.

those pesky lights could be anything, mine did the same thing, not wanting to start (just once) and the light came on two days later, it turned out it was the thermostat. My sister had her light come on and it turned out it was because her gas cap wasn't tightened all the way.........
