Doing the right thing, sometimes involves conditions. For instance, a step father returns to a family because of his love for his step children more than anything else. He pays for it by having to shut down unrequieted affection for someone 700 miles away. Is it doing the right thing? Is it selfish to consider the alternative? Happiness is a very hard thing to conquer.

As one grows older one starts to realize that the concepts of "right" and "wrong" hardly ever exist in reality. Life is all in various shades of gray and the best one can hope for is to lead a life that is as light a shade of gray as possible. Too often we are left picking from the lesser of two evils. Too often there is no answer at all that does no harm. All one can do is follow ones heart.

You actually answer yourself in your question by saying "love for his step children more than anything else.". If that is indeed true, then that is where your heart of now is at. Of all the hearts on earth take care to not break your own heart first and foremost. If a man betrays his own heart it causes damage very very difficult to ever heal.

No 100% sure of what you are asking but understand that the main issue is whether one is being selfish by meeting one's own needs before someone else's. I guess the best advice is to discuss this with someone who can see the real issues and help you through your decision making. There are plenty of counsellors, (even free ones in community centres) you can try. Some are better than others. Pray for the right one to go to + the wisdom to discern.

The main word here is "unrequited". Why go after someone who doesn't love you back, when you have your stepkids who do love you?
