An atom refers to the single particle that makes up the element. An element is a substance composed of many particles, but each of the particles have the same properties.

An example.

In my right hand I am holding a hydrogen atom.

In my left hand I am holding 4,000,000 hydrogen atoms.

In both hands, I am holding the element "hydrogen".

The element "hydrogen" consists of one proton and one electron.

An atom could be a hydrogen atom, carbon atom, boron atom etc. etc. but it can only be the one "atom"

A molecule of water has 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. Because the water has two different types of atom it is a compound.
A molecule of hydrogen gas has 2 hydrogen atoms and because is has two similar atoms it is still an element.

Hope that's clearer.
