The videogame rating system has no legal authority, meaning that it is not illegal for someone under age 17 to play a M-rated game. Stores are not supposed to sell games to minors, but that's merely a matter of store policy (and some states may have laws in place preventing selling an M-rated game to a minor, but those are probably all being challenged by the industry). The ratings are a guideline for responsible parents to decide whether or not their children are ready to play the game. If your parents think you are old enough to play, then you are good to go.

Mature means only the age of 18+ can play Mature rated games. It's not illegal to play Halo 3 for any reason at all. I think it's up to the parents to let their children play mature rated video games or not. I've been playing violent games since before the ESRB ratings existed and my mind is not full of violence or anything. I'm a nice guy at heart, seriously. I totally consider violent video games as just a mere entertainment piece of media for me. Meaning, it's something to entertain you, not to tell you to go and kill people for real.

No, it is not. It is against ESA (the video game industry's trade group) and most retail chail policies to sell M rated games to minors. But there is no law about it at all. Many have been written, but all so far have been struck down as unconstitutional (and will continue to be until one such law bases it on rating created by a government organization).

I don't think it's illegal to play them, because what you do in your house is your business. But it might be illegal for someone under 17 to buy them.

well you can't buy halo 3 if your under the age of 17. it doesn't matter what age you play if you are under the age of 17 and something happens it's your parents fault for "bad parenting"
