They used to be orange down our streets about 10 years ago, but now they change the lights to white, and they look much better now.

I think it may be that white lights can dazzle when they are at a low level. I have noticed that some lights are almost blue and am told the the colour is in fact white. I must be getting old because that confuses me.

Another issue is the waste of energy caused by light reflection upwards which in a large city such as my own I can not really see the stars at night

They used to use Mercury Vapour lamps, which are white but not like household lamps which are tungsten and more golden in colour.
Before that they used fluorescent tubes in a lot of streets but they've all gone now......
These days a lot of new lights use high pressure sodium lamps (son) which are orange but have a more golden peachy colour than the older low pressure (sox) lamps which are monochromatic yellow.
Older lanterns that used to run mercury have been converted to sodium or replaced with a whole new lantern.
BUT......... they are once again putting white lamps in a fair few new lamps but this time they're metal halide lamps which are similar to mercury in colour. So white light is returning to the streets.

Would settle for orange or white street lights,i have none in my village, if you go out after 6pm these winter months you have to take a torch, "bloody dangerouse" when the ice has formed, cant wait for the people to put the chrismas trees in the windows,at least you can see a little....!!!

Test' showed that visibility is improved by this colour of bulb, also it uses less energy than the "normal" bulbs, kind of like the energy saving ones you can get for your home..
