The only one I can think of is the one with Ben Kingsley and Lili Taylor.. The complete diary of Anne Frank.. (This movie used the complete version of the diary, complete with the pages originally taken out due to her criticizing her parents)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpaGLJnclMM
Although.. there might be a similar scene in The Devil's Arithmetic .. but i haven't watched it in so long it's hard to say.

There are 2 biographical video clips approximately Lucille Ball: Lucy & Desi: earlier the Laughter (1991)(television), starring Frances Fisher as Lucille Ball. Lucy (2003) (television), starring Rachel York as Lucille Ball. i think the movie you're searching for is perchance "Lucy (2003)".

I'm not sure, as I don't have HBO, but here is a list of HBO documentaries. maybe the descriptions will help you find what you're looking for?

Edit: sorry I have no idea where I thought I saw the word "documentary" :s. oh well maybe it'll help anyway.

if it involves a jew being alone and then a german officer helping him, it could be The Pianist. was there perhaps piano-playing involved?
