I love my family and see them very little through the year because I live in another state. I'm dreading the same family get togethers and want to do a vacation instead during the holidays but since I love them I don't want them to be hurt . I get maybe 1 week vacation every 3 yrs and feel I need more. Any ideas on how to break it to them? I'm not religious if that helps. The whole christmas shopping thing takes me days and days because of a large family and I'm very selective about what to get them.

You can't always make everyone happy but the the top person on that effort list should be YOU!!
Explain to your family that you realy need a vacation to yourself and immediate family if you have them. They might be offended that u don't consider being with family is good but they'll get over it. Explain that vacation will be good for your health since you obviously often drowning in work. And do make to the next family get together if time off allows.

You deserve a vacation and if that is what you want to do then do it. Do not feel guilty and do not let anyone give you a hard time about it. They take their vacations and do what they want. Why shouldn't you? I would just tell them that you will not be there on the holidays this year because you are taking a much needed vacation. They should not be hurt that you need and want a vacation. Would they give up their vacation every year for you? I doubt it. Take that vacation and have the time of your life.

It has been nearly 4years since i took vacation i am so tired i need a vacation badly do i take now or stay back with family was my dilemma too.I decided i would take a vacation then come back holidays family gathering etc will happen everyyear.My whole family is coming down for christmas lol but im going on holidays.have a wonderful holiday.

Take a vacation if you want a vacation. If they get mad then they will have to get over it. The best advice I can offer is do what you need to make yourself happy first. Good luck.
