Usually you start with a base grain. Like a bag of layer of generic feed from a feed store. You can get diferent formulas based on what your chickens need. The formulas will vary in amounts of crude protein and fat. You can then mix in other grains and treats to supplement it. You can add cracked corn, oatmeal, rice, crushed dog food, etc. I use all of these in my feed. I also add 2 pounds of crushed oyster shells to every 50lbs. of feed. The oyster shells do 2 things. Help the chicken digest the food in their crop and provide calcium to strengthen the shell of their eggs. I also give my chickens cooked veggies, scraps of veggies, cooked pasta, rice, and dry cereal to supplement their diet.

I hope this helps!

look into growing redworms and maggots
both are very highin protien and chickens love them
and it is a cheap (damn near free) way to make your own feed
I also mix some scratch into the worms to add substance to their meal

Mix grasses and grains. with some insects . that is what they eat in the wild .
We let them feed after the cows , horses and hogs. they seem to like that very well.
