A pantiliner should be enough, if you go to the bathroom to check it every few hours. They hold more than you might think, and they have plastic on the bottom, which can save your clothes.
Of course, this is for before the period actually starts. Tampon makers don't recommend using tampons before your flow starts, and it can cause dryness anyway, as can frequent changing of the tampon.
For myself, I use the Divacup, which you can put in before, if you're pretty sure you know when you're going to begin.

Well I always know eactly the time when I'm going to start because I'm on birth control, so I wear a panty liner. Then when I feel cramps I put a tampon in.

I use Kotex, regular absorbency pads, I <3 them. I don't like tampons anymore after having kids. I know when my period is coming, so I just put on a pad and mark it on the calender so I know when I started a new cycle to make sure I am regular.

I agree with a couple of the questions above, just carry a couple of pads in your backpack or purse,or try tampons, they absorb a lot !

I still wear my thong but i get those thong pantie liners so that i can still wear what i want but i don't have to worry about ruining my good underwear or getting an embarrassing leak.

I put in a regular absorbency tampon. That way when I start, I don't have any accident.

You shouldn't put in a tampon in anticipation of your period. I use a large pantyliner - Alldays and Carefree do them.

so i am thinking you are in middle/high school. just carry a tampoon or pad in your back pack and bring your backpack with you when you go to the bathroom. most of the time your period start when you pee.
