Yes, the questioner can decide exactly how many thumbs down an answer can receive before it is hidden from the rest of the answers. Also some people may actually vote for best answer based partly on what other people have rated.

I'm responding to this question, only after having read about 30 or so of the answers, and I'm more confused than ever.

And I've found that appealing to the Panel that's in charge of regulating this website, is usually just an exercise in total frustration. They always respond by listing the set of guidelines, but they will NEVER give a specific, meaningful answer.

An exasperated,

Wotan

I dont think so, I am glade they have it though because I get to feel better about people posting stuff I dont agree with because I can thumbs down it.
O but if you do get too many thumbs down they hide your answer at the end of all the unhiden answers. Someone can still see it if they bring it up.

Getting a thumbs down for a good answer has the effect of pissing me off.

if the asker doesn't pick a best answer, whoever had the most votes gets it. it doesn't matter if they were thumbs up or down votes. so if you give out thumbs down or up votes, you lessen your chance of getting the best answer. what's funny is when the asker chooses your answer as best when others gave you thumbs down a plenty. i don't know about you, but i can't wait to get a million points and redeem them for an ice cream cone.

FWIW, i attempt to furnish united statesand downs fairly fairly; I make area of thumbs-upping comments from Christians that i think of are making a good element or responding to an unreasonable question, or which i think of are being exceptionally honest touching directly to the question.
