I think that a leader who is feared may command more respect and discipline, whereas a beloved leader would play more into emotions that tend to make people more want to be 'buddies' with that person and not so inclined to follow the leader's directives... Very similar to a Boss/Employee relationship. You need to be firm but fair and at the same time can't be 'pals' with your employees because they still need to respect your position and do the job, which may suffer if personality conflicts arise.

Followers would be more careful to follow, obey and honor a leader whom they feared over one they loved.

A leader who is not feared, but is loved, would be naturally expected to grant lenience and forgiveness out of compassion.

However, It would be good to be both. RESPECT is a great part of this that is not mentioned.

Do you fear God? God is the leader of leaders and should be feared, because if you are not in his good graces the alternative is much worse than "fear".

I fear you may not be loved for the way you presented this question. Does that make you a leader? I fear it does not.

Ernesto Guevara you ain't . . . .

It is not necessarily better. Loyalty may come into question if you are feared, whereas if you are loved, your subjects will defend you.

Depends on the situation.
