ok i have a 1999 Subaru outback. i think the engine has a head gasket leak.(the engine heats up and doesn't cool down! not until i raise the rpm to about 4 thousand rpm.) I have a few different choices. first, rebuild the engine. that way i know everything would be correct. The other thing is that i can buy a used one out of a wrecked car and replace the engine with the 2.2 litter engine. right now the engine is the 2.5 non-turbo. Any suggestions? Any experiences? I have about a week. I need some help anything? Please HELP!

Any leak in head gasket will be noticed in loss of engine power and mixing of lubricating oil with coolant. To reduce overheating of the engine, you may change the lubricant oil and the coolant. Any dirt in the radiator may be cleaned with strong jets of water. In case these steps fail to keep the engine in proper temperature, you may go for an used engine.

first id make sure it is a head gasket on it when you said when you raised the engine rpm,s up and it then cools down that indicates poor coolant circulation ,and may just be a bad water pump or a clogged up radiator,id check in to it a little farther before i did anything else ,you may have a good engine and just need a few things done to it,and it may not even need re-built ,check in to it a little more before you do anything drastic to it,good luck on it.

did you change the thermastat, it can also give you the over heat. and the reving of the motor forces water through the thermastat, this is what is most common. Is there water in the oil, that would be a blown head gasket. and might cost as much as a motor, but is worth keeping your vehicle stock and to manufactors build.

First be sure it's you head gasket. Check your oil to see if you have any water and oil mixing. The oil will be a brown, milky, color. Check the water to see if there is oil in the radiator, it will look like water with spots of oil. It sounds more like your thermostat is sticking, or perhaps you don't have enough coolant.

this could be a water pump issue check into it a little more, sonmetimes the vanes on the water pump break off or corrode to nothing causing it to heat up at lower RPM ,faster RPM will cause more coolant to circulate allowing it to cool at high, anywho have coolig system cked

take it to a shop do a compresion test that will tell if the head is bad. it sounds more like low coolant or water pump
