The freedom of being yourself & make the decision not to fit into a "mold" of society's making. The protest movement of whatever kind, you didn't have to agree with the issue, but the fact that people were taking it upon themselves to change wrongs & limitations. The music of course was great, and the world became more of a 'one family' sort of understanding in some ways, but of course Viet Nam hampered that. The best of times & the worst of times.

I wasn't actually a hippie myself because I was just a few years too young at the time. However, I remember the era well. Some of the most innovative music of all time came out during that period. Unfortunately, a lot of those innovations were fueled by drugs. In my opinion, that was the one real downside to the hippie days. I'll admit that while I don't condone drug use, I actually liked the more tolerant attitudes towards drugs back then than I do the highly intolerant attitudes of today.

My philospophy: Be open to anything, meet friends and new people with open arms, share whatever you can give, music brings people together, respect the Earth and enjoy each day as if it is a brand new life.
Despite what documentaries by VH1, MTV, etc say, it was a great time to be alive. I would say the film "Woodstock" captures the feeling the best, imho.

I had a question earlier today asking for opinions about how music today has changed SO much - primarily for the worse. Artists around the "hippie days", as you say, were fueled by true influence and genuine passion for accessing a part of the soul that many artists today lack. We're headed towards electronics and digital sounds. What talent....
Just listen to mainstream/top 40 music.... it's pretty sad.

Peace, Love and Understanding. Pretty much what I live by now, although I enjoy a good debate, and play devils advocate, I believe in tolerance. Never had any time for the drugs. They steal your life away.
