Guess it really depends. Sometimes, leaving without saying goodbye can make things easier for you depending on the situation.

i just moved from my hometown which ive lived during my whole life and i just couldnt tell my friends to meet somewhere for a good bye party i just left and just sent them an email to say good bye. its kind of really hard to say good bye if you're leaving fr a long time

turn around and someone is gone and im hollering and searching....and they've just up and left.
what the??
what was that all about!?
i am NOT used to that !
that is the quickest way to end a relationship with ME!
you dont just up and leave without a warm 'seeya' later, or loveya, or whatever your relationship calls for!!! wow!!!

If goodbye is hard to say, then yes sometimes it is the only way. Better? Uncertain about that...
I am a real wimp to say goodbye... I have emotional attachments that prevent my heart from allowing me to "let go" or as you say, "Say goodbye"...
Some things are hard for some and so easy for others...
