What spermicide do you use and have found trustable?

This is the same spermicide that is found in condoms, the sponge, and other "insertable" contraceptives (gels and creams). The package insert says: Encare is approximately as effective as vaginal foam contraceptives in actual use. However, no birth control method is 100% effective, so follow the enclosed instructions exactly for best protection against pregnancy.
When used in conjunction with a condom and/or a diaghram, this product is more effective. (and less messy!)

Call your doctor/office nurse and ask what they recommend.
FYI: Spermicides are only 80% effective. There is nothing 100% trustworthy.

This is less effective than other methods. Effectiveness can be increased if used with condoms. Must wait 8 hours before taking a bath or douche. Usually last only one hour. Side effects: Vaginal irritation, some women are allergic to spermicides. May interrupt lovemaking - most products need insertion at least ten minutes before intercourse. Majority of products only last for one sex act.

Nonoxynol-9 is an anti-bacterial, which is NOT good for the vagina. The vagina is a delicate balance of ph levels and Nonoxynol-9 throws it off, which can cause yeast infections at worst, and bad itching at best. I'd stay away from it and just use condoms.

Some condoms come with spermicide lubricant. I've used the Trojan kind (it has a purple wrapper). It kind of irritates, but I would go with any kind of lubricant made by big companies like Trojan and Lifestyles.

Its best use is probably to back up a condom. The pregnancy rates for vaginal suppositories alone are higher than you would want them to be. And no STD protection, of course.
