Yes. It's definitely a safe country to go to.. Just like Czech Republic. Bratislava is beautiful!

Pickpocketing poses a problem, but then again it happens everywhere. Just watch your valuables!

Unfortunately, a friend of mine got robbed in Budapest, Hungary. :(

What matters is that he's still alive.

Is Slovakia Safe

Yes, it is safe. Just keep your wits about you. That means:

If an area looks dodgy to you, it is probably dodgy. Don't do anything you wouldn't do at home. Watch your valueables, pickpockets are a real problem. If possible, go out in a group. Make photocopies of your passport data page, one for you, one for your parents, one for your teacher. Always leave your passport at the hostel, take a photocopy along instead. Have at least 3 wallets, one with the small change in your pocket, one with the big money and the plastic cards either at the hostel or very close to your body (moneybelt, bra, panty-hose pocket) and a third with slightly bigger change. Distribute everything so that if one wallet gets stolen you can still have fun.

So just general safety advice. :-)

I also suggest reading up on the history of Bratislava and Slovakia. Both the old one from the Middle Age and the more recent one from 1918 on. Focus on how modern Slovakia came to be after Word War I and II and after the Velvet Revolution.

The scepticism about eastern Europe needs to stop. It's safer than major western cities both in Europe and the US. You'll find that the city isn't any different than what you're used to seeing wherever it is you live. Of course nobody ever beleives all of this till they've visited themselves, ah well ><

It is safer than New York, Chicago, Detroit, Houston and all the other larger cities in th US!!!!!!!!!
Europe is not a Djungle, dear. Bratislava is a relaxed city, and the Slovaks, as well as the Austrians and Checs etc are friendly people.
