my favorite WWII novel is Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. It is one of the seminal works of dark humor. It's an excelent book.
Norman Mailer's The Naked and the Dead is also very good.
James Jones' The Thin Red Line and From Here to Eternity.
William Brinkley Don't Go Near the Water
For non-fiction you might consider The Guns of Navarone and A Bridge too Far. Tom Brokaw's The Greatest Generation is largely about WWII.
Band of Brothers was a book before it was a TV show.

The best WWII fiction book I've ever read was Cynthia Rylant's "I had Seen Castles". Its a short book, just over 100 pages (103 iirc) and is much better than you'd expect from such a small book!

I'm a big WWII faction read and this was just a brilliant! it's called the devil's arithmetic and there a movie too with Kirsten Dunst but I've never seen it. As a recommendation I give you a book review!
