unfortunately only ONE of the answers listed was actually close to the REAL reason that you have an erection when you wake up. so let me fill you in.
Except during very scary dreams your genitals become aroused during REM sleep, and you have an erection or increased vaginal lubrication and clitoral engorgement (yes it happens to women too!) regardless of whether the dreams content is sexual. The phenomenon has been studied mostly in men, from whom measurements are more easily recorded and for whom the common "morning erection" stems from the nights last REM period, often just before waking. In young men, sleep related erections outlast REM periods, lasting 30 to 45 minutes on average. A typical 25-year-old man therefor has an erection during nearly half of his nights sleep, a 65-year-old man for one quarter. Many men troubled by erectile dysfunction (impotence) have morning erections, suggesting that the problem is not between their legs.
So for all you ladies that say "its just cuz your a man!" or "its because you have to go pee!" your aroused when you wake up too, even though you dont realize it . . .

From Search.com:
Penile erection usually results from sexual stimulation and/or arousal, but can also occur by such causes as a full urinary bladder or spontaneously, most commonly during erotic or wet dreams. Erection is caused by signals from the parasympathetic nervous system; it is countered by the sympathetic nervous system which is mainly responsible for the "fight-or-flight" response. This explains why under stressful conditions, an erection is often difficult or impossible to achieve, and sudden onset of stress can deprive one of erection. The sympathetic nervous system is also responsible for causing ejaculation, which explains why most males lose their erection after ejaculation.
Erection may occur spontaneously in the absence of any specific sexual stimulation, particularly in adolescent males. All men who are physically able to achieve an erection do so during sleep, typically several times in a night. This fact is utilized by sexual health practitioners to ascertain whether cases of erectile dysfunction are psychological or physiological in nature

You are supposed to. You are male. It is part of the process of your body waking up.
This is actually an important item. If it did not get erect, then the tissue could shrink or lose its abilty to get erect. Failure to have an erection in the morning (or during the night) is a symptom or sign of arteriosclerosis and other medical problems.

Hello
I have read your question and yes it's normal to every men.
This is the cause why they happens:
Studies have shown that men have several erections and arousal periods while in the dreaming phase of sleep called Rapid Eye Movement (REM). An erection is the stiffening and rising of the penis, which occurs during sexual arousal, though it can also happen in non-sexual situations. The primary physiological mechanism that brings about erection is the autonomic dilation of arteries supplying blood to the penis, which allows more blood to fill the three spongy erectile tissue chambers in the penis, causing it to lengthen and stiffen. The now-engorged erectile tissue presses against and constricts the veins that carry blood away from the penis. More blood enters than leaves the penis until an equilibrium is reached where an equal volume of blood flows into the dilated arteries and out of the constricted veins; a constant erectile size is achieved at this equilibrium
Okay I will try and explain how erections happen but you will be most amazed by the fact that most of the time (at least in young men ) we don't do anything. Also, you will have to put up with a long explanation. In order to have sex a male penis must be erect. That erection is related to physical health, mental health, and emotional health (ego) If a male is threatened or scared or has anxiety about sex he may not be able to get erect. Erections occur when more blood is pumped into the special tissue in the penis than can leave. The arteries carry blood to the penis and the veins carry blood away from the penis. When the brain gives the command the arteries dilate (become very large) and more blood is pumped into the penis than can be carried away by the smaller veins. The result is the penis becomes engourged with blood and becomes erect. When erect it becomes more sensitive and sexual arousal is easier. The following things will trigger the command in the brain so that an erection occurs. Physical stimulation (the boy or other person touch and rubs the penis), visual stimulation (the boy sees a girl, a picture, or woman in a form of undress that triggers an erection) Males are genetically engineered to be set off by visual stimulations. This is one reason why most users of pornography are males. In childhood and early puberty (5 to 13) boys can get spontaneous erections. The brain just decides to trigger an erection. This is very embarrassing to boys because it happens at school, while at play, in front their girl friends, in the shower during PE. The boy does nothing to cause this it just happens really! Girls think boys are always horny and that is true for teen agers but boys don't do it the hormones do it to them. Mental stimulation, sometimes just thinking about a special girl or having masturbated last night etc. will stimulate an erection. Boys get no rest while they sleep either. While a boy sleeps at night he usually has up to 7 erections in his sleep. And if he has not masturbated for several days and is of the age to produce semen he may have an orgasm in his sleep ( a wet dream ) in which he shoots semen all over his PJ's or briefs and the bed sheets. It is usually a rather large amount. Then in the morning he wakes up with a very hard erection that is the result of pressure from a full urinary bladder on the veins in his penis. That has to be dealt with in some way so he can urinate. Erections are very much a part of a man's life. In our youth we do not do a lot to cause them they just happen. As we mature and enter puberty we learn to take charge of our sexuality and to control them to some degree but not totally. A man can cause an erection by physical stimulation, visual stimulation, sex play with a partner, or mental stimulation or fantasy. And most men use those things to get erections at private moments in order to masturbate in private and release all that sexual tension. When a man gets a partner then she helps release all the sexual tension and love making or having sex envolves physical, visual, and emotional stimulus

Most men do. It's because:
A - Your body has been rubbing up against things
B - you subconsciously dream about things that you are attracted to
or
C - Your body acts differently while asleep.
Nothing to worry about.
