Brands that come to mind are Onan, Kohler and Generac. If you can help me make an informed decision to purchase one over the other, it would be greatly appreciated. I just want to know why one is more than the other and they all generate the same power. Somewhat confusing. Thanks.

I worked for ComEd for over 32 years. I serviced our back up generators for the northern part of Illinois. You pay for what you get in longevity. A cheaper unit that is going to run a lot is no bargain as you will end up rebuilding it or replacing it. If you are going to use it for short duration emergency outages a couple of times a year a cheaper unit would suffice. Any of the brands you mention are excellent, but they all sell lower priced units with less features also.

Onan makes a great generator. Quiet and well built. Thats the reason fire departments use them on their trucks. I like Kohler engines also. Honda is making it's way up in quality generators too. When you pay more, you usually get heavier duty wiring and components. You don't want to be doing service when you really need the power going.
