Or do kids seem to be losing their innocence more now than before? I teach 6th grade and my students (for the most part) know a lot about sex, drinking, and, when they think they won't get caught, they curse like a sailor.

I don't remember myself or anyone I know even thinking about these things at 12.

Many sources attribute a quote about the dreadful
behavior of children to Socrates. Its actual origin is in dispute, but
the dispute is an interesting one:

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for
authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place
of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their
households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They
contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties
at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.

It's true, kids are losing their innocence (and virginity) a lot earlier than they did back in the day. My mom taught fifth graders a couple years ago in an area where many "lesser fortunate" families lived and a few of the kids even did drugs! Some of it scares me, how much lack of responsibility and lack of discipline is showing up in a lot of the youth nowadays. Fortunately, this is still only a small portion that represents that younger generation. There are some truly wonderful kids/teens out there that do a lot of amazing things for others, not just themselves. So don't let your sixth grade class ruin your picture of their whole generation, they aren't all like that!

No, it's not just you.

The country is on its way down the tube as fast as it can go.

Our society has become almost entirely amoral.

It's sad but true, and I don't think there's anything that anyone can do about it.

Probably just a civilization going thru a standard of evolution, that has occurred throughout the centuries.

It occurred with the Egyptians after centuries of ups and downs; then the Greeks, and lastly, most exemplary of all, that of Rome.

The east was no exception. China went thru centuries of being a highly advanced society, but then declined - not to consider its relatively recent emergence as a viable culture.

The same with India and Japan, although Japan's evolution seems to have been more upward than most, and is today a unique type of culture: a strange wedding of east and west.

But you know, who can say; it just seems to be the fate of human kind.

I use to be concerned, but no longer. I try to live my life as responsibly and ethically as I can, and don't worry about the rest of the world any more. What else can one do?

A resigned,

Wotan

Yes, I agree with you. I blame it on the availability of the internet, the instant communications, and THE PARENTS!

When I was a child I was not exposed to all the violence, sex, and "adult" type of information as kids are today.

I don't know if kids will ever allowed to be innocent again...too much 'crap' out there continuing to flood their senses 24/7.

Sad, because the innocence of my childhood are very fond and loving memories. Too bad most of the kids today will not have those types of childhood memories to fall back on in their old age.

No, it's not you. I keep reading all these studies & reports showing that kids are having sex earlier and earlier.

Interestingly, there are a few studies that have shown that kids are hitting puberty much earlier than the last generation & the generation before.

I swear it's all those damn hormones & antibiotics in the chicken & milk....

Me... I didn't really know much about sex until I was 13... didn't lose my virginity until 15.... and that was probably too young...

I's the media. Truly look at the shows 20, 30 years ago. Heck there was a big controversy when they said "pregnant" in "I Love Lucy". Now we get commercials for PORN on regular TV (girls-gone-wild etc.). Seriously, listen to current music, all of the cursing, references to sex, drugs. Then you get the pervert point of view that innocence is overrated, well yeah! if you like oversexed little kids

Some people are just more innocent than others. I was really innocent too, and I was teased by the less innocent kids for not knowing about certain things.

i agree, i'm 15, and nobody taught me about sex or anything, but the way kids talked about it, i learned it everything from them. and kids these days do curse a lot, it's very disturbing! but at 12, i knew what sex was, drinking and doing drugs was bad and unhealthy. but i never thought about it!! i still don't! it's just not right!!

Innocence has nothing to do with maturity.

As a 2 year-old I knew as much as my parents...somehow i understood everthing that was going on. Just like everybody, even my cats know what we're saying....we talk about them, they hang around and "listen", we're sad, they sit on us, we're angry, they get all serious...even if these are just words.

Losing innocence is a form of rape. It has nothing to do with being premature or not.....
