any laptop will do. Get a fairly cheap one if all you want to do is internet and not serious games. Usually places like Subway or Tim Hortons will have wireless networks, as well as libraries and public places like that. Something that is not nice to do is also park in front of an apartment building and chances are that somebody has a connection that is unprotected that you can search the web on.

Any laptop with an a/b/g/n card. The MacBook is an example of that card. It is compatible with all routers. Yeah you can get free internet if your neighbors have an unprotected wireless network. But they could sue you if they wanted.

the best value so far has been the gateway mt3423. the best laptop is hard to say. they all do the same thing for u. dell,hp, compaq, sony. Just remember the more popular the name, the more ur gonna pay for the laptop. so sony's are gonna be higher than most and probably wont burn cd/dvd's well. since sony spends millions on anti-piracy and most the audio cd's are made by sony's sub companies. piggy baccking hotspot for too long is illegal. the fines are steeper than if you where to get caught downloading music.
