As of November 7, 2007 there have been 264 planets beyond our solar system discovered. (..http://vo.obspm.fr/exoplanetes/encyclo/encycl.html..)
Are you confusing "galaxy" with "solar system." Our solar system is where Earth is located and consists of a total of 7 other planets (..8 planets total..) Our solar system and many others are located in a galaxy. A galaxy is an immense celestial structure with billions of stars in it. Our galaxy is called "The Milky Way" galaxy.

There used to be 9 planets in the SOLAR SYSTEM but the people who define what a planet is changed the definition recently so there are now only 8 planets and several dwarf planets. Quite a few other stars have been determined to have planets by various indirect means (meaning not direct observation) so the GALAXY has many more than 8 or 9.

Let's back up a minute. We need to compare "solar system" to "galaxy". The solar system is sort of our own neighborhood, where we know everybody and what houses they live in, and we are in direct contact with them pretty often in our routine lives.
The Galaxy would be like an entire country. We have only a limited imagination to conceive of how many people live in an entire country and we are unlikely to directly meet all of them. In between those two "sizes" would be our "city", then "county" then "state" and so forth, all of which are likely to be large enough, themselves, that we might have trouble really imagining all of the things included in them.
Just within our own solar system, there are far more than just 9 planets. There are also "moons" around most of those planets, a large number of space rocks (asteroids) some of which are large enough to almost be moon- or planet-size. Together those number around 300 if I recall right. The total number of objects in the solar system, large enough to do harm to the Earth if we collided, is somewhere between 3000 and 30,000 if I recall right. My point is that there are a lot more than just planets, worth mentioning. Since they are relatively close by, we could potentially study or visit them, and a couple of years ago, a European space probe fired a missle at one of them, just to learn what it was made of.
There are some other postings on this site about "galaxies" and their estimated size, and number of stars and so forth. If our sun is any example, you could guess that the average star has around 10 "planets" (the term is vague these days), so if their are 150 billion stars, you could guess 1500 billion planets and be in the ballpark.

There are 8 planets in our solar system.
As of this month, scientists have found 264 exoplanets (planets around other stars) so far.
Probably many more to be found - they are finding some almost every month. It is estimated that at least 10% of sunlike stars have planets - in our galaxy alone that is on the order of a billion stars that could have planets.

Actually I'm only 12, so I'm not so sure, but there are 9 planets in our Solar System. There are many many solar systems in one galaxy. And Pluto was demoted, but remember that we dicovered a tenth planet, which makes it 9 again, if my math is correct.

Our galaxy has billions and billions of stars. I am sure it has much more than 9 planets in it, since several 100 have already been found.

So far, we know of over 200 planets in this galaxy.
Therefore: no, I'm not sure about only 9.
Latest count 264 (plus 8 in this solar system).

im sure there are ALOT of other planets out there, duh.
and technically, in our solar-system there are 9 planets and an asteroid. it comes once every.... something years and orbits on an extremely wide, angled oval.
oh yeah, i forgot about pluto being a dwarf planet.

Don't forget...in our solar system, Pluto was recently "demoted", so there are only 8 "official" planets now.
