My wife works for Old Navy in the Mall in Ft. Walton Beach Florida. They recently had an employee of the month poll. My wife had 10 votes. the runner up had 7. it was an open box, so everyone saw the votes, and everyone knew who had the most votes.

The rules clearly state that any one can vote for any one, as many times as they want, and the manager has no say.

when the manager saw that my wife had the most votes, she immediately made the decision to give it to the runner up. She used the excuse that people voted more than once, and the final decision was up to the manager.

Does anyone else wonder how this manager continues to get paid?

NOTE: This information came from another person, who doesn't work directly with my wife.

for the record:
neither myself nor my wife are being sensitive about this. And i was the first one to say those rules are stupid. so stop trying to preach to the choir. your not a very good preacher.

I was simply sharing a story, and seeing what other people thought.

I NEVER ASKED FOR A SOLUTION!!

so shut up.

Actually it makes no sense to have a rule that anyone can vote as many times as they want to. If that is the rule, then the "honor" means nothing at all, since a person could just put 20 votes for themselves in the box each month. Are you sure that's what the rules say?

If it was obvious that several votes had come from the same person (which could be obvious from handwriting, then to be honest it sounds like the manager made a reasonable decision.

Might be better to forget about this. It sounds stupid anyway and your wife and the other person could have both voted for themselves more than once so it makes it all meaningless anyway unless there was a prize involved. This maybe shouldn't be taken as super important and the best advice for your wife is to be good at her job and be a loyal employee. Were customers able to vote or just staff. It all seems a bit unnecessary to me. But even if your wife put all the votes in for herself she should have won under those stupid rules but don't follow through with complaints or she might not be popular with her boss any more. Yes drop the subject now.

Well, to me it seems the rules should be that a person can only vote once for one person, but maybe they can vote for as many different people as they want. If not, somebody could just fill out 10 votes for themselves and win.

Regardless, the manager should have given your wife the award, since she had the most votes.... or at least made the rules more clear.

I'd report him to someone higher up, even corporate. Old Navy and Gap Inc. has very high standards, especially when it comes to honesty and integrity in the work place. If those are the rules, then the manager clearly had no right to step in and make that decision. Old Navy also has an open-door management policy, so if your wife feels comfortable enough to say something to him, then good luck. If not, report him and that'll end the bias in that store :)

I agree it's office politics, but how can it be fair when you can vote as many times as you want. It seems like it should be one vote per person and the one with the most votes would win, but with this manager, it would not have made a difference.

Sounds to me like the manager doesn't like your wife. Sometimes people are like that. If it's really a problem and going to effect your wife's pay rate or something then she should complain to her district manager. If it's just a title then maybe she should look into why her manager doesn't like her and approach the manager to resolve whatever the issue is, as it is likely to only get worse and not better unless addressed.

She needs to get a job eleswhere, because even if we try to figure out why????? This is a circus of a job? The show must go on! Tell her she can do better in a more mature setting...this is childish. And not worth the brain cells....

Information from another person who does not work directly with your wife, is almost as good as rumors that you hear in a dream.

Come on. Did the winner get a $ 100.00 a week raise?
Don't be so sensitive.It isn't worth it.
If she's so sensitive, it's time to look for another job.
