This is a little weird, but here goes:
If there is a gay marriage and one of the spouses dies, is the remaining one a widow or a widower?
I'm just a little confused . This question is NOT meant to be funny, and I have nothing against gay people. I was just wondering. (p.s. I'm only 12)

i guess if the couple were men then the remaining partner would be a widower, and if they were female then a widow. just because we are used to their being a husband and wife in a marriage, doesn't mean that when 2 women marry that one is a husband and the other a wife, they are both wives, or husbands and therefore they would both be mothers, or fathers if they had children. sexual preference doesn't change your gender. interesting question for a 12 year old!

A widow is the spouse no matter what. A widower is the person that is leaving the other "behind".

Being a widow has nothing to do with gender. In other words, a man can be a widow or vice versa, a woman can be a widower.

hmmm. Well, I would have to say that in a male male couple the remaining one is a widower becuase of the male connotation involved in the word. However, in a female female relationship the remaining one would be a widow because of the female connotation.
The two words, widow and widower, does not relate to the dead spouse but rather the alive one.

there really is no such thing as "gay marriage" because marriage by definition is the sacred union of a man and a woman.

Homosexuals may live together in some sort of committed relationship, but it's NOT marriage.

FYI - a widow is a woman who's husband has died, while a widower is a man who has lost his wife.

:)

Answering it seriously...I dont really know...Very few places recognize this as being a "marriage". So my best guess is there is no widow or widower is such a relationship. Someone...I guess...will call a person a widower or widow depending if it is a relationship between two men or two women.

They are whichever they refer to themselves as. He or she may call her/him self a widow or a widower. I have heard both terms used by both sexes. It may be a little confusing for you right now but as you get older and ask questions with an open mind you will understand more about relationships of all kinds.

If they were married, I suppose the surviving spouse could refer to themselves as the widow or widower.

I would say its the same as a hetero marriage. Woman left, she is a widow; man left, he is a widower.

Well, I don't know if widow is the right word, But alone is a good word for that situation.
