First question: They are fraternities and sororities. A group of men and or women that are part of the same network. Some are for meeting new people and having a good time while others are to help with careers and job placement. They use the Greek alphabet for the names.

Second: A Dean is like a principal and enforcer of the law at a private school.

These are Fraternities and Sororities. Fraternities are associations of men and Sororities are associations of women. Just think of them as clubs. The whole system is the "Greek" system or the "Greeks" I do not know why that is or how it got started. But each fraternity or sorority name is usually (3) letters of the Greek alphabet. Sometimes only two. At a College or University with a greek system (or Panhelenic Council) there will be several of these Fraternities and Sororities. They are often in large mansions converted for communal living (apartments) but some fraternities / sororities exist without a "house." These clubs offer their members a sense of belonging and bonding with people of like interests. They frequently raise money or otherwise seek to benefit the community so they have a desire to be purposeful. They are more often famous for (or infamous for) partying, parties, pranks, and causing mischief.

Some are "Professional Fraternities" or otherwise have a distinct identity. Some are organized for Agricultual students (and have agricultural professors and advisors) or there is the Engineering Fraternity.. etc. etc. Some are (or become known as) the Hockey Fraternity... and most of the hockey players join that one... for lacross, or soccer / football... you get the idea.

As a Student: it offers you a place to make friends, to live in a place other than the University's dormitories, to hire your own chef, have your own kitchen, have a home of sorts, collectively with your friends.

After graduation it offers you a network of alumni with whom you have something in common... so theoretically these people might give you the edge if you apply for a job at the company where they work.

Becaue of discrimination laws some Fraternities now must admit women if it is a Professional Fraternity that offers more concrete benefits to members.

Outside of college there are adult Sororities too.... usually teachers, or hom-makers, or some other common demoninator.. attarcts the club members. (After college, women may have sororities but the "clubs" for men are the Lions Club, the Moose Club, the Elks Club, or professional / business associations in a community are the Kiwanis or the Rotary Club. There are also Country Clubs.

Back to college Fraternities and Soroities: The alumni own the house, and rent it to the undergaduates... so by paying dues and rent for a few years you technically accrue a financial partial ownership... but everyone would have to vote to sell it and "cash out" and there really isn't much value there.

Sororities for women and fraternities for men are social, sometimes academic or honors organizations for students in college. They sometimes live in a frat or sorority house (although they don't have to) and the names are based on the Greek letters, such as Phi Beta Kappa or Sigma Tau Gamma.

A dean is an administrative head of a department or school.

Hope that helps.

A dean is a type of college administrator. They run the various departments of study, i.e. the Dean of Engineering runs the the engineering department.

Frats and Sororities are organizations students can join that are essentially about building bonds with people who are like you. It is a support structure and a guaranteed group of people to associate with. I'm sure someone who was in a frat or sorority would say I'm oversimplifying it, but that is how I've always perceived them.

The pi sigs and all that stuff are greek fraternities and sororities. There are popular organizations that students join. Most of them have history of charity, academia, or community ties, etc. that have carried on throughout history. Students join them for social and professional ties typically.

The Dean is like the head of the college basically

You are referring to special college organisations in which you have to pay to have friends. On top of that, once you join these clubs you have to act like a little ***** to anyone who is not part of your clique.
