Avoid really hard snow your first time - try going after a small snowfall of at least an inch or two. This will make the snow softer, you will be able to slip sideways with more control and falls won't hurt as much.

Learn how to fall first. Do NOT try to stop a fall with your hands - wrist injuries are the most common. Roll when you fall and try not to land directly on your tail bone - ouch. Please wear a helmet if you can.

Practice putting on your gear at home - the boots (if possible), the bindings, the leash, etc.

Ask to learn the "falling leaf" which is slipping your board and then learning how to slide to the right, stop, slide to the left, stop, etc. This allows you to learn edge control and how to flex the board to initiate turns in both directions. Learn this for your toe side and heel side. If you keep falling, your teacher can hold your hands and slide alone either above or below you.

Good Luck

Well, I'm no pro, but I've been snowboarding a few times, I see no one has given any tips, so I'll see if I can help

Your front foot is really important. Also, Keep your weight forward is really important. It will seem strange, but if you force yourself to keep your weight forward, on your front foot, you'll have more control.

Also, when you carve the snow, make wide turns, don't go straight down the hill. If you do, you'll go too fast and that won't be good.

And while this may silly, make sure you stay hydrated by drinking alot of water. The first time I went, I drank coffee, and ramen soup, and was dehyrated, and I cramped up real bad..

Good Luck and have fun. Understand that you'll fall alot, but accept it! :-)

Your cousin is right, you're gonna hate it at first. You're gonna fall on your butt alot, and have tons of bruises. Like the other guy said, keep your weight forward, it's not like ballet being center, you gotta stay forward. Just listen to what your cousin says to do, and I'm sure you'll be fine. And remember just have fun!
