Ok...I found websites on topiary, but is there a way to trim a 8ft tall juniper bush to look spiraled?

I have done this, in fact I have one now that I am working on. What I did was to take a rope, and fasten it to the top of the trees with a clothespin. Then I took the rope and spiraled it around the tree to the bottom, and fastened it. Then I took my pruners and carefully cut everything away around the rope, leaving a nice wide spiral where the rope was. Once you have your shape, it is easy to keep it clipped a couple of times a year. When you first do it, it may look sparse but as you keep it clipped, it will thicken up and look like the ones in the nurseries.

I would find it very hard to trim one already in the ground. We get these in pots and it is easy to set it on a cart or table and trim as you turn the pot. I suppose you could get on the ground and begin trimming and going round and round as you went up the plant; junipers are sharp, so get some good gloves and sharp snippers.

bottom line is that it takes years of careful pruning to get a well manicured juniper spiral. It is best if you start when the tree is young.

Just start trimming. Get some sharp shears, or a good headge trimmer.

It will look half dead if you cut it back much, but usually they come back and fill in nicely.
