I think I've been feeding my fish a little to much and want to fast them for a two or three days; but I think a guppy and platy are prego. Is it okay to fast them?

I want to fast them since I believe they have been being overfed; and I've also heard that by fasting for a couple days it helps clear up the fact if they are prego or just fat; but I'm not sure if it will stress out a pregnant fish if they are fasted.

If the fish are prego they are not going to give birth in the next couple day; so the fry won't be at risk. Also I have been told it's recommended to every once in a great while fast our fish; as humans often do.

Thanks roland; why do you suggest feeding the pregos less; what benefits does it have for them?

some people believe that fish need to eat every day...in most cases this is wrong. if you go to a good pet store (one with a large assortment of fish) you'll notice their fish being fed once every two days...quality not quantity. if your fish are prego you might want to cut back on the feeding but in a normal circumstance you could feed them well every two to three days.( tho i feed mine small amounts everyday)

in nature fish nibble all day long, they never know when the next meal will be so the rule is to stock up while you can. fish do not die from an occasional over feeding they die from overfeeding polluting the water and nothing being done about it. if you think over feeding is occurring do some water changes (small ones often to avoid fish stress)
part of my business is to supply stores with fish and the ones that feed every other day are the ones that have the most problems (sorry Roland...) the ones that maintain the healthiest stock tend to feed a varied diet in several small offerings during the day.
stress on a pregnant fish (its hard to say how much stress fasting would produce) can sometimes cause miscarriages
so sometimes its just easier to wait it out.
goodluck

Fasting for more than two weeks might be excessive, but less than that is not at all harmful. Make sure the water is nice and clean, especially if you've been "overly generous with the food.
Lots of experienced fish keepers regularly fast their fish for one or two days a week. Think about it,there are long periods of time when they are living in the wild that they go without food.

No it isn't okay to starve them just because they are pregnant. Only feed them what they will eat in a few minutes, then scoop the rest out so they don't have leftovers floating around to pig out on later. But NEVER fast an animal, even poor fish!

i'm quite confident there are all-vegetarian fish oil supplements, or rather "omega 3" (we get lots of omega 6, which could substitute into quite undesirable for you in case you have too lots devoid of adequate omega 3, this is greater durable to return by potential of) supplements. yet whilst they are too costly, basically make confident to consume a number of here, and you gets lots of omega-3. Why do you want to fast them? Do a water change and just lower the amount of food being fed. If they're hungry when they give birth they're much more likely to just eat their babies.
