Just curious...

A friend was helping me cut out a pattern and we were both cutting a large piece at the same time, when getting to those little triangles that you use to help match up pieces, she followed the pattern and cut them in, while I cut out (away from the pattern). We both were doing it the way our Mom's did.

How do you cut yours?

I still go by the old patterns and cut the triangles to the outside. Even If the pattern Is set for the Inside clip.
It helps me put the garment together better. I guess It's all In what you get used to doing.. Good luck and hope It all comes out as planned. Just remember your the one It has to please and you can personalize It to suit your needs....

normally I cut them out. The McCalls pattern I'm working now actually shows them sticking out. Maybe it's a brand issue?? Sometimes instead of cutting the triangle I just make a small slit in the seam allowance showing where the pieces match up. I don't sew a lot, but a lot of what I do sew is doll clothes and they have a teeny 1/4" seam allowance so I couldn't cut a triangle in for those even if I wanted to.

I was taught to cut the triangles out - away from the pattern - and to match them on the fabric pieces later. If you cut them away then there's less chance of a mishap - you won't be so likely to cut into the seam allowance of the fabric, and when you zigzag the edges, the triangles disappear anyway!

Like Kay, I only use a small snip down the center of the notch. It is much more accurate and easier to match. Use two snips for the double notches. Just only snip to the point of the notch, that way you won't cut into the seam.

I was taught not to cut the triangles, I just cut a single cut right in the centre of the triangle. Sometimes doing it this way can make it hard to see, but I'm used to it.

It's also the way we were taught in patternmaking.

Cut the triangles out...otherwise you will have a weakened seam where the triangles are, if you cut in.

I have seen some people cut them in, but I feel like that would weaken the seam. So I always cut out.

Neither; I use snips or chalk marks (just a tiny straight snip with scissors) into the seam allowance. Triangular notches are not as precise.

Cut out not in. Cut it the way it lays on the fabric. They are there to strengthen the seam. (I sew a little, my mom made our clothes as we grew up and made lots of things. Everyone referred to her as a seamstress, except her.)

All thru sewing classes, we called them "notches" and my teacher preached: Cut the nothes outward, BIG notches. So that you don't lose them.

You can trim them off later. I would NOT cut them into your seam allowance.
