I read an article a few months ago about the Red Wings lease with Joe Louis Arena is going to expire in a few years.
Has there been any news yet on if they will extend their lease or build a new arena?
Just in my opinion, Joe Louis Arena is trashy and is in a horrible location, put the new arena in Auburn Hills!!!

#1 reason why fans are staying away is because of the location of Joe Louis Arena, that was in a survey, #2 was because of the economy.
And in another recent survey, JLA was voted one of the dirtiest arenas in all of sports.

Justin R is spot on...Ilitch has purchased many vacant lots just behind the FOX Theatre (Ilitch owns this as well), & would like to build a new home for the Red Wings there...It's a smart choice due to the fact that Comerica Park (Tigers, & Ilitch owned), & Ford Field (Lions) are only a few blocks away - making this the entertainment hub of Detroit.
As for the Joe - it's not in too bad of a location - it's just that there's not much nearby for fans to spend their extra $$$ - lol...Seriously though - the plans for the Joe, & building next door (Cobo Hall) would be to demolish, & re-build so the Detroit Auto Show has new/modern facility to keep the image that the city of Detroit is the "Automobile Capital" of the World.
Lets hope both Ilitch, & that goofball Mayor Kilpatrick can work out their differences so Detroit can continue to re-build itself.

The plan is to build a new rink behind the Fox Theater. I heard the Illitch is buying up everything back there so when the time comes they can build the new rink there. As with the JLA, I heard that they want to make an aquarium out of it, like Shedd's in Chicago. As for the the JLA being in a bad area, where did you hear that and why the heck would you want to move it out to Auburn Hills? I guess you are one of those suburbanites who are affraid to walk downtown at night, right?

there replaced into talk some years in the past of Illitch splitting the fee with the city and construction on close to the Ford container, Comerica Park, and the theaters. It benefited all of us for the reason that he have been given a clean section and the city have been given the land required to enhance Cobo so as that they do no longer lose the motor vehicle tutor. in spite of the undeniable fact that Detroit is broke, they elect somebody to pay for Cobo, at an identical time as they keep finished administration of it. it relatively is why the Wings will stay interior the Joe, the motor vehicle tutor will pass to Novi (if Michigan is fortunate) or out of state, and Cobo would be yet yet another deserted construction.

I have not heard any recent news about Joe Louis Arena or the construction of a new arena. I also have heard some other people talk about the poor condition of the current arena (J.L.A.).

I think Mike Illitch should build a stadium in his little empire by Woodward and I-75. I like the idea of keeping the arena in Detroit mainly because Candians like to come to Wings games too, and it makes it easier for them to bring their money to Detroit...lol

Auburn Hills? Next to the Pistons thats not a good idea. That will never happen because Mike Ilitich is huge on renovating Detroit and would do nothing to hurt the city. If they were to move it they wouldmost likely drop it somewhere next to Comerica Park, Ford Field, and the Fox theater.

The Red Wings need to stay in the city. How about tearing down the old Tiger Stadium, and putting up a new arena.

I sure hope not. I love the JLA. It's an awesome place to be. What do you mean a crappy location? Sure, its in Detroit, but right next to the Detroit River and all the casinos (which rakes in a ton of money thanks to the drunk red wings fans who just attended the game) and at night you got a great view across the border to canada. Do not relocate/renovate.
