I own a shop, and have dealt with this issue many times. What I do is; I look in the fuse box for a slot that says ACC and pick up my power there from the side that has no power when the fuse is removed. This way you have a known source that is fused with 12 volts. Any slot in the block that is marked ACC is powered up only when the ignition switch is on. You could pick it up off the starter, but you would have to fuse it right away, and you run the risk of the wire being melted by the exhaust pipe. I just ran mine out through a grommet that was already in the firewall for some other wires, tied it to the harness around to the middle of the firewall, and added some of that cover with a split in it to keep it safe. All I had left to do was put a butt connector on it to plug onto the thermostat. Keep your fuse at about 7-10 amp, or as low as you can without it blowing it. This way you are safe, and won't have to worry about burning the vehicle to the ground.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

You could but the starter hot wire may not get a full 12 volts. I would recommend wiring it into the ignition circuit at the fuse block and don't forget to put an inline fuse holder in the wiring or make sure it's a fused circuit.

Locate the fuse box and run a wire from there off of about a 15 amp fuse thats ONLY HOT when the key is in the on or run position...

Best to run from ignition switch in the run position, that way it goes off when cars not running.
