Some perfectly good names, such as Madison and Jordan, have been ruined by the trendoid spelling travesties some parents have been inflicting on their children. New rules:

*The letters "y" and "i" are not always interchangeable, as in "Bryttani." Furthermore, not every vowel is replaceable by "y", as in "Stephynie."

*Not every Celtic or Celtic-sounding name merits "-eigh" in place of "(e)y" or "ie." Names like "Ryliegh" or "Leigh-Anna" do nothing to celebrate your Irish or Scottish heritage. Try a real Celtic spelling, like "Maeve" or even the common "Sean."

*Don't use "eye dialect," such as "Anfoni" for "Anthony." It makes you look ignorant. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_dialect.

*Don't omit schwa vowels, as in "Jaydn." And don't add superfluous silent or double letters, as in "Jhaemmessone." (Translation: Jameson.)

Babies have to live with that name for the rest of their lives. Just think of how "Maddussynne" or "Jhawrdn" will look on your kid's Harvard application

Great advice, but not just " trendy" spellings. Try to stay away from "trendy" names too. Go 180 degrees away from what Hollywood movie stars use.

Moon Unit, Moxie, Rumor, Apple ?? These are terrible examples of a movie star confusing there kid for a fashion accesory.

My cousin named her kid Giovanny. Terrible, what is the point of using a nice Italian name if you spelled it wrong. And she really did spell it wrong. She did not bother to research the correct spelling.

Come on people, I put more care and thought in to naming my cat than some people put into naming their child.

Ooh! Me, me! I am (jumping up and down with my hand raised)! LMBO

Seriously, how someone could possibly think spelling a name obviously incorrectly -- ON PURPOSE -- could in any way be a good parenting choice needs some serious therapy.

Naming a child isn't simply an exercise in how "yooneek" and "kre8iv" you can be. It isn't some cheesy middle school competition. An actual CHILD -- one day to become a real, live ADULT! -- has to live with these monstrosities!

And in all honesty, how ignorant do you have to be to seriously believe that misspelling a common name in any way makes it somehow less common? Ignorance may be bliss, but is there some form of dim magic that would mystically make Emuhleehighea any less popular than Emily, if the parents insist -- against every rule of grammar -- the two are still said identically? If it's pronounced the same, all you've managed is a terrible spelling of an anything-but-unusual name! Ugh.

Poor, poor babies.

Edit: Regarding an above comment, I fail to see how using a proper spelling of a name in any way indicates the individual lacks creativity or only likes common names. All three of my girls have at least one name that happens to be quite uncommon (though still very real and correctly spelled LOL). Parents with more unusual taste certainly aren't limited to ONLY popular choices or completely created ones. There are millions of names that fall somewhere in the middle.

And I fail to see how you can argue that none of the names "from the books" seemed to fit throughout the pregnancy, but the child was born and it was obvious a misspelled word would be perfect. Did it come out with a little sign that read "Destined for illiteracy" or something? LOL That's just a very sad thought.

Honestly, it's the parents that feel purposefully spelling a name incorrectly is in any way unique that are obviously lacking in creativity. Anyone can do that! It takes actual effort to find a real, underused name for your child, if that's what you prefer. It seems a trendy misspelling is just another way to avoid actually putting in that effort. Shame!

I do not like Trendy spelling

My daughter is Hayley
We got the spelling from my husband favorite movie as a child the Parent Trap. Hayley Mills, was the star in it
It's funny, because, the trendy spelling is Hailey or Haleigh, and people ask why I spelled her name wrong

People my age, all know the spelling from the Parent Trap, so her teacher spelled my daughter right, and the other Hailey, she spelled Hayley.

Some would say, my daughter is the made up spelling, when it's the only spelling I knew of

I can not stand when people miss spell names to make them unique. Madason A, Madason B Maddusynne C, she will be the third Madason in the class

Right there with you. It's the most obnoxious thing ever... I mean, aside from parents naming their kids things like Jayden and Bryson to begin with...

What's wrong with decent, normal names that have stood the test of time?

And I am so sick of yuppie names like Mary Catherine and Madeleine Anne or Dylan Cody or Tyler Milo....

What are people thinking? I mean, honestly.

We're trying to chose a name for our first son and the suggestions people have been giving us are just absurd...

And STOP MAKING UP NAMES!!!

It's like some people want their children to hate them.

I agree with you 100%! I just put up a post about this topic earlier today. I really hate the weird spellings, but I also hate the weird names...like why do people give their kids names like Chance, Snowflake, or Turquoise. These poor kids all have to grow up with these ridiculous sounding names.

I cannot stand the trendy spellings! Spell the name right for goodness sakes! The child is not going to be unique just because the parent made their name that way.

Bravo!!

I put "President" in front of my kids names to see how stupid it would sound before I named them. Both my kids names go FANTASTIC with "President" as a title.

Can you imagine President Bryttani Jones??

I hate trendy spellings. It just means a kid is going to have to constantly tell someone how to either spell their name, or pronounce their name. I wish parents would think about how their child is going to feel as an adult with "trendy" spelled name.
