Not too many jobs besides mathematical, engineering, or computer science research would use polynomials on a day to day basis. But because of research, they make your life ALOT easier. For instance, the software you are using on your computer, uses algorithms. These algorithms have been heavily researched and scrutinized using complexity analysis which in essence describes how fast and how efficient an algorithm runs. Because of this scrutiny the algorithms that the software uses are constantly being optimized to run better. And computer scientists are constantly looking to solve problems in a polynomial amount of time. Again, though, the normal person is not going to use a polynomial on a day to day basis. But the research behind what a normal person would use on a day to day basis depends heavily on mathematics and polynomials in general.

Degree 1 polys (linear equation) are used in anything that increases/decreases constantly. How far you car travels at 55 mph D=55t. Thats a 1 degree poly.

For 2 degree polys the big examples would be ones involving gravity distance. d(t) = v*t+1/2gt^2.
Also, minimizing distance between 2 moving objects on a flat surface.

For degree 3 there are some problems with minimizing volume.

Other than that, the ones mentioned about computer programs is all I can think of.

In addition to the examples already given, it occurs to me that polynomial are used in some sophisticated applied statistical techniques that fall under the category of "nonlinear regression". so anyone looking for trends in data in the social sciences might benefit from work that was done using polynomials.
