When Jesus died on the cross. 30 AD, more likely 36 AD, possibly somewhere in between, it was said in the bible that the sky went dark for a few hours. Can you help me determine if there was a full eclipse in Jeruselem during this time? thanks!

A solar eclipse will last (at the longest) only about 7 and a half minutes, not hours. So if the record is accurate and the event was hours in duration, then it couldn't have been an eclipse.

However, ancient writers would often exaggerate an event to make it more dramatic or important, so what was written as lasting hours could have only been minutes.

You can search the "Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses: -1999 to +3000" at this site. The files are about 22 megabytes, in pdf format. Be sure to read the description file.

The solar eclipse of year 29 Nov. 24 was (nearly) 90% total over Israel. Year 33 Sept 12 was about 50%, and year 39 Dec 04 was less than 10%.

Yes an eclipse did occur, there are recorded histories of this from around the world. The Lord lived to the age of 33, this is made very clear in the new testament. The distance of the moon from the earth would have no relevance as the old testament bible predicted this event for centuries. God can do all things so to doubt that it happened using our puny human minds seems to me to be sacreligious, either you study and believe or not.

well if you want to track the pattern of lunar eclipses in the middle east back two thousands years good luck. dont forget to figure in the fact that the distance from the earth to the moon has changed quite a bit since then, im gonna say its gotten somewhere between 150-300 feet farther from earth.

and then dont forget that you have no idea the exact year, month, day, time, none of that. and there are atleast 2 lundar eclipses a year, so from 30-36 there was about 12, so without knowing the date your SOL.

Remember, too, that the Bible is full of euphenisms. To say the "Sky went dark" could well mean that all who were in the know grieved, and were in a dark mood. I don't know about an eclipse, though...eclipses were well known even 2,000 years ago, and it doesn't seem like the writer(s) of the particular passage(s) would have used a euphenism to describe the event.

I can't help to find that out. But it seems that, if there had been an eclipse, it would have been well-known in scientific and religious circles, and discussed likewise. All ancient societies knew what eclipses were by then.

The description does not match a solar eclipse. Darkness lasts for a few minutes at most.

Hey Chad (Nice name) I see what your getting at, my reccomendation to you is to get the hebrew translation for the scripture that you are studying in specific detail, there are several translations for the hebrew words that might give a more unbiased translation than the King James Version or NIV. Best of luck I find most of your questions very interesting!

Passover is a full moon. Daytime eclipses happen at new moon.
