A gay friend of mine told me that he's going to smile at some random guy around our campus. I'm really worried about him, he might get caught up in a fight because... y'know... HOMOPHOBIA. He told me that doing this might get him a boyfriend :D
What are the chances for a straight guy to return a gay guy's smile? Should I try to stop my friend from doing this?

i dont think its really a big deal people smile at people all the time weither theyre gay or straight...and i dont think anyone would take it the wrong way just tell him not to grab anyones butt lol

Anyone can smile at anyone and it only means hello. It doesn't mean that smiling is going to cause a fight. If a gay guy or girl smiles at a straight guy or girl, it doesn't mean they are going to fight. Most gay people know when someone else is or isn't gay. They can tell. Don't worry about your friend. There is no harm in smiling at someone.
It doesn't mean that when a straight guy returns a gay guys smile that he is interested in the guy. People smile because they are friendly, not just because they might be interested.
Don't worry about your friend smiling at a straight guy. It doesn't necessarily mean anything to the straight guy. It is how people treat others. If he acts things out, then that might cause a problem if he tries to hit on a straight guy by saying something disrespectful. Most straight guys will say, Hey, I am not interested in other guys and that would be that.
Have faith in your friend.

My brother is gay as well. So i know exactly what you mean when you worry because depending on the guy he may be over dramatic.
So my advice would be if you both know the guy... if he is calm and mellow type then i suppose it would be ok.... since he's not the melodramatic type.
But if he's like a jock... and always surrounded by the ladies or tries to act like mr. macho... or even has history of fighting ... you know... things like that... then i would stop him...

You can't stop people from doing anything. A nice straight guy might smile back. However - the odds of him finding a potential mate that way are slim to major beat down.

smiling doesn't necessarily say "i want to sleep with you". That may be what he's thinking, but don't forget that just because you know his motive the person he's smiling at probably doesn't. If there is a problem, it's easy to get around. I don't think you should worry.

straight guys don't go around smiling at each other,unless they are friends.however, it certainly should not end up in a fight. unless your talking about high school age people. a guy that age may not be mature enough to process something like that. if he knows the guy is straight why instigate a fight

Its ok to smile at anyone you wish to,but if he go's too far,he might find it harder to smile next time without his front teeth.I would return his smile but only because a smile can go a long way on a bad day,and we all could use more smiles.

Well, I would smile back as long as the gay guy wasn't hitting on me. As long as it was casual i wouldnt mind.

the straight guy wont smile back. if your friend gets into a fight tell him to tell the guidence counselor, and tell your friend to holla at gat people. we cant have straights turning gay.

well i respect you for being worried about your friend!!
but i guess that if he is bold enough to do it even if a guy does not smile back, you should let him do it!!
