Thousands of Chileans to March Against Femicide
Run Date: 11/04/07
By Matt Malinowski
WeNews correspondent

Safety advocates in Chile are planning nighttime marches across the country to protest the growing number of women killed by domestic violence; President Michelle Bachelet has proposed related legislation to be debated in coming weeks.

excerpt:
The activists initiated their awareness campaign "Careful! Machismo Kills!" three months ago with solemn memorial services dedicated to victims of femicide. It used empty pairs of shoes to represent the more than 300 women they estimate have been murdered because of their gender since 2001.

--I thought the empty shoes was a good idea. (Also, that they took the issue seriously - not with apathy)

Have you heard of any other good ideas to combat domestic violence? --

All credible sources (WHO, CDC, justice depts, police depts, etc.) concur that there is MORE male on female violence - approx'ly 85%. There is MORE male on male violence but FR groups would rather focus on the women-on-male violence. (Equality with a Vengeance). There are some researchers with FR philosophies who trivialize DV by making up scales that include "nagging" and running up credit cards as definitions of DV. The VAW act supports shelters around the country, some of which take in men or provide referrals. Fact is injury to men is less serious than to women, men often have the finances to stay elsewhere, and have friends to stay with (they dont fear for their lives like women might).

Spreading viciuos lies about violence against men does little to support your cause. If you were truly interested, you would -support VAW, be concerned about male-on-male violence, and not attack women's services.

i have empathy for male victims of violence, but not the perpetrators of lies

Teaching women that domestic violence is unacceptable and to leave at the FIRST sign of it would go a long way to reducing it. Too many times women (and some men) stay in abusive relationships which just get worse and worse over time. The key is early intervention.

The fact that it is now socially unacceptable to be a "wife basher" helps a lot too.

On a societal level, making shelters available, and with adequate childcare provision so women have somewhere they can leave to. Supportive professional services including doctors, lawyers, credit unions (some women can't leave because they have no money with which to survive) and practical initiatives of that nature.

Raising public awareness so women know they are not alone, and that they can get out and survive and build new lives.

And challenging the religious notion that marriage should be sustained no matter how hard it is (very pertinent to Catholics)

I don't know that any of these ideas are particularly creative, I do know they have met with proven success.

Fresh thinking on this subject is a good idea.

Re machismo: Maybe machismo in Chile is different, but I was raised to see man-on-woman violence as unmanly and very shameful, so in my experience 'machismo saves' rather than kills as a men tend to resist violent urges against women. I have seen guys take a slap and more from girlfriends and resisted retaliating due to this pressure. If you want to get creative, why not tackle DV on the basis that 'Entitlement Kills', as clearly many women think they are entitled to beat their male partners with total impunity.

If you focus solving domestic violence by tackling the issue of men beating women then you can only solve up to 50% of the problem because about 50% of DV is woman-on-man, at least in the US and Canada.

Well I would suggest NOT broadening the definition of "abuse" to the degree where ANYTHING might constitute abuse thus increasing the DV stats.

...Because that's what feminists do with both "abuse" and "rape" when they push for the broadening of definitions.

Also, when feminists deny or marginalize the female on male violence with ridiculous statistics like 98% of DV is male on female violence... It makes for unbelievably skewed numbers that only represent the anti-male bias of the surveyors with complete disregard for truth & accuracy.

Educating youth with the idea that it's not OK to initiate violence on men even though the media makes it out to be both socially acceptable and humorous would also help combat violence.

...And educating youth that violence of ANY kind isn't the answer.

Anti-violence should be gender-neutral.

...Just like our laws. The Violence against WOMEN act, is sexist & wrong.

...& to get men to report ALL acts of DV (especially given the broad definition nowadays) & not be afraid to admit that your wife/girlfriend drew blood would help get accurate numbers of DV.

...Just a couple suggestions.
